Background A Decade's Worth of Pediatric Dog Bites: An Epidemiological Analysis Every year, there are thought to be 800,000 dog bites that need medical attention. Reviewing the characteristics of child dog bite injuries and looking at temporal trends are the goals of this study. Methods Over a ten-year period, paediatric patients with dog bite injuries were found using the Kids' Inpatient Database. The following information was recorded: demographic information, the primary payer, injury details, hospital stay duration, and treatments. SAS 9.3 was used to do the statistical analysis (SAS Institute Inc, Cary, NC). Results There were 6308 patients in all that were found. Age at the time of injury was 6.4 4.3 years on average. The segment most impacted was children under the age of five (39.3% in 2000 versus 44.7% in 2009, P 0.001). Approximately 60% of bites in 2009 were to the head or neck, up significantly from 53.9% in 2000. Numerous injuries were complicated by cellulitis (33.7% in 2000 compared to 44.8% in 2009, P 0.001). A procedure was performed on 50% of patients overall; 31% received an invasive surgical procedure; and 5.1% needed skin grafts or flaps. Conclusions Dog bites are a frequent reason why children are hurt and place a heavy weight on both families and the healthcare system. Evaluation of these injuries' traits can direct educational initiatives.
